We were recently at a small private event for Lucid Motors in Los Angeles, where they revealed their EV car to a small private group. Who is Lucid Motors you ask? Well, Lucid Motors is possibly the new up and coming kid on the block that is sure to make their presence felt in the EV space when their car hits the market. Everyone knows Tesla’s been the leader in the EV market for a while, although now it appears as if that could be challenged, in the not so distant future, with likes of Lucid Motors, Faraday Future and of course the large OE’s that are starting to crowd the room as well.
What’s most impressive about Lucid Motors is the stated mileage per charge, of their lithium ion battery, which is said to be in the 400 mile range. Good bye to range anxiety! That would be enough to push most customers past range anxiety, which has held back some of the demand for EV vehicles to date. Now all that doesn’t come without a price, which Lucid plans to be about $100,000, but that is definitely less than what Tesla was offering the Model T for, fully optioned, just a few years ago. So, the trend is still on bringing the price down, while the mileage range continues to increase.
We still believe that the magic number of 30-300 ($30,000 price w/ 300 mile battery range) will need to be hit to make EV’s a viable option for the masses. On that front it appears as though Tesla will still get there first, or pretty close with their Model 3, but they will start to feel the pressure from other companies moving forward.
As for the fit and finish of Lucid’s car, well, overall I was pretty impressed. It was not quite as sporty as the Tesla Model T, but it looks more like a proper sedan that a family could comfortably fit into. Lucid’s projections are to bring their car to market by 2019. We will all be eagerly awaiting its arrival, accept perhaps Tesla.
